Rave Lucid

MazelFreten

Artistic direction and choreography: Brandon Masele and Laura Defretin
German premiere

She is a hip-hop dancer, he is an electro dancer and world champion in this discipline. Laura Defretin and Brandon Masele founded the company MazelFreten together. Since 2016, they have been combining electro and hip-hop in their choreographies, creating their unmistakable signature style. In addition to their own shows, the duo devised choreographies for music videos, advertising campaigns, and haute couture shows for major fashion brands. "Spontaneous, committed, and visceral" are the words Defretin and Masele use to describe their work, which is largely inspired by the dance battle scene. Their shows are not only celebrated in France, but also tour throughout Europe and reach a wide audience.

"Rave Lucid" is a tribute to electro dance, the first urban dance style in France. It originated in the clubs of the 2000s before migrating to the streets. Ten dancers with strong personalities come together in a mixture of precisely choreographed routines and plenty of room for individuality. The 120 beats per minute demand tireless concentration and extreme control from the Eboï and Equeenz (electro dancers). Meanwhile, their hypnotic arm movements refer to the world of raves, which are conceived as a festival, a party, a collective trance. It is only fitting, then, that the title "Rave Lucid" can also be understood as "rêve lucide" (lucid dream) in French.

The company's work is driven by the desire to inspire young people to dance. Every single member of the ensemble wants to give something back to the art form of dance, which can be formative for individual lives. "Rave Lucid" is a rousing evening for all generations.
