The Prisoner
Text und Regie: Peter Brook und Marie-Hélène Estienne
Script and Direction: Peter Brook and Marie-Hélène Estienne
German Premiere
A man sits alone outside a prison. Who is he? Why is he sitting there? Was he sentenced to be there or is it his free choice? Why doesn’t he leave? What will he gain from his vigil? Deliverance? Forgiveness? Redemption?
Peter Brook revolutionised theatre. Ever since he published his seminal theatre manifesto The Empty Space in 1968, his thoughts and works have shaped an entire generation of artists. He is based at Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord, Paris, where he continues to expand the concept of theatre. His latest production The Prisoner presents a daunting glimpse into the abyss of crime and punishment. Together with Marie-Hélène Estienne, Brook challenges us to question the nature of justice and forgiveness. This provocative play, which will be shown for the first time on a German stage, explores the limits of freedom as well as the ever-returning spectre of guilt.
