The Great Tamer
von Dimitris Papaioannou
Greek choreographer Dimitris Papaioannou is a visual artist. He effortlessly transcends the divide between dance and visual arts, creating breath-taking images out of the bodies and movements of his dancers. He draws inspiration from 2000 years of art history, ranging from Greek antiquity to Rembrandt and Magritte. The images he creates on stage are absurd and funny, quiet and poetic. Watching the performance is like immersing yourself in a dream that stays with you for a long time.
Papaioannou likes to describe his productions as ‘absurd circus’ because are out of the ordinary. Before its world-wide tour, The Great Tamer took the 2017 Festival d’Avignon by storm.
Nominated for the Olivier Award in the category "Outstanding Achievement in Dance".
“One of the ten best dance pieces in 2018.“ The Guardian
