im Gespräch mit Denis Scheck

In Conversation with Denis Scheck

Louis Begley belongs to the pantheon of great American writers. Works like About Schmidt, Memories of a Marriage and Killer, Come Hither have been translated into 18 languages and won numerous awards.

Born in 1933 to Jewish parents living in Poland, he survived the Holocaust thanks to forged papers. His family emigrated to the United States in 1947, which marked a new beginning for Begley. For years he worked as a lawyer in New York City. In the early 1990s, he gained worldwide recognition for his novel Wartime Lies. He also published a trilogy of novels about the ageing lawyer Schmidt, the first instalment of which was turned into a film with Jack Nicholson in 2002. We welcome Louis Begley at Ruhrfestpiele, where he will be hosted by literary critic Denis Scheck.
