After reading countless romances of chivalry, an impoverished squire reinvents himself as Don Quijote de la Mancha. He defends his fellow citizens from all evil with the help of his faithful page Sancho Panza. Together, these two tragi-comical characters take a perilous journey to win the fair Dulcinea of Toboso – only to fail spectacularly in their doomed struggle against windmills.

Jan Bosses’s staging of Cervantes’ radical text celebrates human imagination as well as the dramatic craft. He is joined by a dream team of experienced actors: Ulrich Matthes and Wolfram Koch bring the fantastical “Knight of the Sad Countenance” and his trusty sidekick to life with great zest.
