Direction: Anna Bergmann
Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe in cooperation with Uppsala Stadsteater, Sweden
“The Broken Circle” tells the deeply moving story of Alabama, who runs a tattoo studio, and her husband Monroe, a stout atheist and banjo player in a bluegrass band. When their daughter Maybelle is diagnosed with leukemia, the unconventional couple struggles to come to terms with their overwhelming grief and pain. Music might be the only way to deal with their heartbreak.
Director Anna Bergmann stages this devastating tale as an electrifying mixture of country concert, family drama, performance art, video and puppetry. This eclectic musical event captures the entire range of human experience, from the gut-wrenching agony of loss to the little moments of happiness.

„Anna Bergmann is not afraid of pathos, but with the use of very different aesthetic means, she ensures that there are refractions that prevent her from slipping into kitsch. This also applies to the expressive Frida Österberg, who, together with Jannek Petri, plays facets of a couple's life that leads to the very top and from there into the abyss. It goes without saying that both are excellent singers.“ Süddeutsche Zeitung
